The members of the project will present the results of research on workers and labour management in the construction of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in the 14th century. Following this, experts in the history of construction work in the Middle Ages will talk about other Italian building sites of the time: the cathedral in Milan and the cathedral in Orvieto, the papal building sites and those of the Piedmontese princes.
The main objective of the discussion is to answer questions that are still of interest to us today: what strategies made it possible to overcome periods of deep crisis - epidemics, famine, wars - in order to complete great works such as cathedrals and fortresses? What was the contribution of workers and society to these successful initiatives? And what impact did the great building sites have on society itself, in terms of work but also of collective identity and resilience?
These and other questions will be at the centre of a reflection that the project wants to share with the citizenship, who are invited to participate or to follow the event via streaming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3aubUxEQqI
